How to clean your roller blinds quickly and easily

How you go about cleaning your roller blinds will depend on the material of your blinds, as well as the severity of any marks. Here’s a simple breakdown of how to clean your roller blinds at home.

Roller blinds are easy to maintain and can usually be cleaned while still mounted.

ROLLER BLINDS CLEANING METHOD #1: VACUUM AND WIPE

In most cases, you’ll be able to simply wipe or vacuum your roller blinds. This method is perfect for removing surface dust or debris.

You will need:

  • A damp cloth.
  • A vacuum with a brush attachment.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR ROLLER BLINDS WITH A CLOTH OR VACUUM

  1. Check what your roller blinds are made of. Many roller blinds are vinyl-treated. This means they have a smooth, glossy appearance and feel. If this is the case, your blinds will be waterproof and you can use a damp cloth to wipe them down. Otherwise, simply use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
  2. Fully extend your roller blinds.
  3. Wipe or vacuum the surface of both sides of the blind. Using your damp cloth or vacuum, simply go over the entire surface of the blind. There’s no need to take the blind down or use any harsh cleaning products.
  4. If wet, allow your blinds to dry fully before retracting them. Even vinyl blinds will develop mould and mildew if rolled up when wet, so be sure to let them dry completely.

ROLLER BLINDS CLEANING METHOD #2: DEEP CLEANING

For more persistent marks, deep cleaning may be necessary.

You will need:

  • A bathtub.
  • Mild laundry detergent.
  • A drying rack.
  • A shower head.
  • A non-abrasive cloth or sponge.

You will need to remove your roller blind to deep clean it.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR ROLLER BLINDS IN THE BATHTUB

  1. Remove your blinds from the bracket. If you look at each end of your roller blind, you’ll see it’s attached to the wall using small metal brackets. One of these brackets should have a cover which can be opened so that you can simply lift and remove the blind. If you’re having trouble, call your supplier for specific advice.
  2. Unravel the blind slightly. You want the fabric to be somewhat loose so water can reach every surface.
  3. Place the blind in a bathtub filled with warm soapy water and allow to soak. Use a mild laundry detergent rather than soap or dishwashing liquid as this will be the kindest to your blind’s fabric.
  4. After an hour, check your blind for stains. Examine both sides and spot-clean where necessary using a cloth or sponge.
  5. Rinse the blinds. Drain the bath and rinse the blinds in clean water, or use your shower’s spray head to ensure there’s no detergent in or on the fabric.
  6. Allow to dry completely. Fully extend your blind and drape it over a drying rack. If the weather is good, place the rack outside for an hour or two to speed up the process. Once dry, mount your blind to the brackets once more.
